What is it? Why is it important?

A Medicinal Product (MP) is a substance or combination of substances that is intended to treat, prevent or diagnose a disease, or to restore, correct or modify physiological functions by exerting a pharmacological, immunological or metabolic action (EMA definition).

MPs that are tested in a study are named Investigational Medicinal Product (IMP).  In studies, an IMP is a MP that:

  • Is tested or used as a reference
  • Has a marketing authorization but is used or assembled (formulated or packaged) in a way different from the approved form (e.g. use of an intra venous administration instead of oral intake)
  • Is used for an unapproved indication (e.g. an approved hypertensive MP is newly tested for the treatment of dementia)
  • Is used to gain further information about an approved use (e.g. increased safety information, such as the occurrence of sleep disturbances)

More

Medicinal Products (MPs) are either of chemical (e.g. manufactured) or of biological origin (e.g. blood and blood products), with a pharmacological activity able to do what it claims (e.g. reduce pain)

What do I need to do?

As a SP-INV / Site-INV, familiarize yourself with the definition of an MP and IMP.

Studies with MPs require mandatory approval by:
